Israel Launches Major Airstrikes on Iranian Military and Nuclear Sites
Tehran, June 13 — Israel has launched what it is calling a “major strike” against Iran, targeting military and nuclear facilities in a bold and potentially explosive escalation of regional tensions.
At approximately 3 a.m. local time, residents of Tehran reported hearing multiple explosions. Iranian media confirmed that between six and nine blasts occurred across various districts of the capital, including Mahallati in the northeast—an area known to house military officials and their families.
Eyewitnesses and state television footage revealed plumes of smoke rising from several residential and strategic locations. Initial reports from Iran’s state news agency IRNA say that several civilians, including women and children, were killed when residential buildings were hit in the strikes.

Israel has named the operation “Rising Lion.” In a recorded statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the attacks as a “decisive moment,” aimed at halting what he called Iran’s “march toward nuclear weapons.” Israeli officials claim the operation targeted Iranian commanders and missile production facilities.
One of the most significant targets appears to be the Natanz nuclear facility in central Iran. Footage aired by Iran’s state-owned Press TV showed fire and smoke at the site, though the extent of the damage remains unclear.
In response, Iranian authorities suspended all flights at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport. There are currently no reports of the airport itself being damaged.
Global Reaction Mixed
The international response has been swift and divided. Republican U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham voiced strong support for Israel, posting “Game on. Pray for Israel,” on social media. In contrast, Democratic Senator Jack Reed condemned the attack as a “reckless escalation,” urging both nations to seek immediate diplomatic restraint.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States was not involved in the operation and warned Iran not to retaliate against U.S. interests in the region.
Despite international concern, Israeli politicians from across the spectrum have backed the strikes, calling Iran an existential threat. Thousands of Israeli reservists have been mobilized, and senior officials have reportedly been relocated to secure locations amid fears of an imminent Iranian retaliation.
The situation remains fluid, with fears that the conflict could spiral into a wider regional war. Both nations have yet to signal any willingness to de-escalate.
